HOW FLOATING SHELVES WORK   •   ATTACHING THEM TO WALLS   •   MAKING FLOATING SHELVES   •   SHELF RISKS

How do floating wall shelves attach to walls?

If you are beginning to take a serious look into having a set of floating wall shelves in your home, the best way to do so is to buy some brackets used to make them. The brackets typically come in the form of two long metal channels, one that screws to the wall, and one that screws to the shelf. The shelf is then snapped into the bracket so that it is hidden completely between the wall and shelf.

Making your own floating shelves

If you would like to go out and make your own floating wall shelf, we suggest using the pin method. This is probably the most forgiving method there is. The reason being, once you hit the studs in the wall, you'll need to drill the holes into the floating shelf. If you miss the holes, you can move the shelf to the left or right and try re drilling them, so you'll have several chances to hang the floating shelf.

The second method is to buy a specialized metal pin. Holes are then drilled into the studs along with corresponding holes drilled into the shelf. Pins are tapped into the wall, then the floating shelf's holes are tapped onto the pins. This method creates a very strong shelf that is capable of holding a lot of weight.

Are there dangers to making your own floating shelves?

On of the biggest mistakes people make when building their own floating shelves is obviously with the support and/or method thereof supporting it. Even with the pin type floating wall shelf supports, you'll be limited to the load that the shelf can handle before it breaks. If placing heavy objects on a floating shelf, remember to push them back as close to the wall as possible. This will minimize the stress on the brackets and hardware.
